先举个栗子再进入正题：

unpredictability这个词来说(1995年第五篇文章)，词根部分是dict,和“说”有关，pre是前缀，表示“前面”，前面还有一个表示否定的前缀un,后面的ability是一个后缀，表示“某种能力”，通常翻译为“可...性”，所以，综合看来，这个单词的意思就是“不可提前说出来的特性”，就是“不可预测性”。

再比如，知道normal是“正常的”，ab-是否定前缀，那么abnormal就是“不正常的”。但是请注意，这个单词使用的时候，如果指人的话，通常指的是“变态的”，所以要慎用。
